Make the move yourself first: transformations
The Short Answer
A transformation question moves a shape on a grid — translating, reflecting or rotating it — and asks where it ends up. The habit that protects the mark is making the move yourself before looking at the options, because one option in every row is designed to look right to somebody who has not. Count the squares first, and track one landmark rather than the whole shape.
What is a transformation question?
A shape is moved on a grid and your child has to say where it ends up, or which of several pictures shows the result.
Three moves come up. A translation slides it. A reflection flips it. A rotation turns it.
By Year 5 your child has met all three. What has changed is that the questions now come two moves at a time, sometimes with diagonal mirror lines, and always with an option in the row that has been drawn specifically to look right.
Move it, then match it
Count. Squares, or cubes. Get the numbers before anything moves.
Find your landmark — a corner, a dot, the bit that sticks out. Track that rather than the whole shape.
Make the move yourself, before you look at the options.
Match, and check the landmark landed where you said it would.
Step three is the whole defence. A child who looks at the options first is choosing between five pictures, one of which was drawn to catch them. A child who has already worked out where the shape must be is only checking which option agrees — a much easier question, and one the distractor cannot touch.
Telling a turn from a flip
Two moves, in order
Reflecting and then translating does not land in the same place as translating and then reflecting.
So the order the question gives is part of the question. Do the first move, draw the result, and do the second from there. Attempting both at once is where two-move questions go wrong, and drawing the intermediate step costs about five seconds.
Where do pupils lose marks?
Looking at the options first, and being caught by the one drawn for that.
Choosing a reflection when a rotation was asked for, which the order test settles.
Doing two moves in the wrong order, or simultaneously.
Eyeballing a diagonal mirror line instead of counting point by point.

- (1, 1). Five right takes −4 to 1; two down takes 3 to 1. Do them one at a time and write each down.
- In the order the question gives them. Transformations do not generally commute — reflecting then translating lands somewhere different from translating then reflecting, so the order is part of the question rather than a detail.
- Walk round the outline naming the features, always in the same direction, on both the original and the option. Same order means it was turned. Reversed order means it was flipped, and no amount of turning will undo that.
- Yes. A translation slides without turning or flipping, so the shape ends up facing exactly as it started, just somewhere else. If the option you have chosen faces a different way, it is not a translation.
- Because the alternative is judging by eye, and a wrong option is drawn specifically to survive that. Counting takes a few seconds; being caught by the near-miss option costs the mark and the time spent choosing it.
How much practice does this type need at home?
Cut a shape from card — something with an obvious corner or notch so there is a landmark worth following — and move it on squared paper. Slide it, flip it, turn it, and ask your child to describe what you did.
Describing the move is harder than performing it, and it forces the vocabulary the question uses. Then reverse the roles and let them move it while you describe, so they hear the words being applied to something they can see.

How do you tell a rotation from a reflection?
Walk round the outline naming what you pass, always in the same direction, on both shapes. If the features come in the same order, the shape has been turned. If the order comes out backwards, it has been flipped, and no rotation can undo a reflection. It is the same test we teach in non-verbal reasoning, and it works here for exactly the same reason.
Do two transformations have to be done in order?
Yes. Reflecting then translating does not generally land in the same place as translating then reflecting, so the order the question gives is part of the question. Do one, draw the result, then do the other from there — attempting both at once is where two-move questions go wrong.
What about diagonal mirror lines?
They are harder to picture and the method does not change: take one point at a time, and count its distance to the mirror line at right angles to it, then count the same distance beyond. Doing it point by point is slower than eyeballing it, and eyeballing a diagonal reflection is close to guessing.
