Turned, not flipped: rotation questions in the 11+
The Short Answer
A rotation question shows a shape that has been turned about a point. Nothing else changes: the size, the side lengths and the angles all stay exactly the same, and only the direction it faces is different. The examiner always includes a mirror image among the options, because a flipped shape looks very like a turned one — and a flipped shape is never the answer to a turning question.
What is a rotation question?
Your child is shown a shape that has been turned about a point, and asked to find the option that matches. Nothing else about the shape changes at all — the size stays the same, every side stays the same length, every corner stays the same angle. The only difference is which way it faces.
It sounds like the easiest question on the paper. It is the one where marks quietly disappear.
The reason is simple and deliberate. Whoever writes the paper knows that a flipped copy — a mirror image — looks very nearly identical to a turned one. So they put a mirror image among the options, every single time. A flipped shape is never the answer to a turning question, and telling the two apart by eye is not a skill anybody has. It needs a test.
How do you teach the method?
We call it the Clock Hand, and the name does the work: your child tracks one part of the shape the way you would read the hand of a clock.
Do not try to turn the whole shape in your head. That is what everybody does and it is why the question feels hard. Pick one part of it — a dot, a shaded square, the bit that sticks out. That is your hand.
Say which way the hand is pointing now. Up, right, down or left. Out loud, or under your breath in the test.
Turn it. A quarter turn moves the hand one place round. A half turn moves it two. Say where it should end up before looking at the options.
Find the option where the hand points the right way — and only then check that the rest of the shape has come round with it.

How do you tell a turn from a flip?
This is the test that decides most rotation questions, and it is worth teaching on its own. We call it Same Order Round.
Put a finger on one landmark. Walk it round the outline — always the same way, let us say anticlockwise — and name what you pass. The long side. The step. The point.
Now do exactly the same on the option you are checking, travelling in the same direction.
If the features come in the same order, the shape has been turned. If the order has reversed, it has been flipped. That is the whole test, and no amount of rotating can undo a reflection.
Where do pupils lose marks?
Four traps, and every one of them is on the paper on purpose.
The mirror image is the big one, and Same Order Round is the answer to it.
Then there is right amount, wrong direction — a quarter turn clockwise chosen when the question asked for anticlockwise. Saying the direction aloud before looking at the options costs a second and prevents it.
Third, right direction, wrong amount: a half turn where a quarter was wanted.
And fourth, which catches more children than you would expect: choosing the option that has not moved at all, because it matches the original perfectly. It matches because it is the original.
How can we practise this at home?
Rotation is one of the few types that is easier to practise with your hands than with a worksheet, and while our lessons use printed figures, the useful home practice does not need them.
Cut a shape out of card — anything with an obvious point or notch, so there is a landmark worth tracking. Put it on the table and turn it a quarter and a half while your child says where the landmark has gone, before they look. Then turn the card over to make the mirror image and ask them to prove it is a flip by walking round the outline.
Five or ten minutes of that, two or three times a week, does more for this type than a page of questions, because it separates the two ideas the paper deliberately blurs.

How do you tell a rotation from a reflection?
Put a finger on one feature and travel round the outline in one direction, naming what you pass — the long side, the step, the point. Do exactly the same on the option you are checking, travelling the same way. If the features come in the same order, the shape has been turned. If the order comes out backwards, it has been flipped, and a flip is never the answer to a rotation question. This test never fails, and judging it by eye almost always does.
Why does my child get these wrong when they seem so easy?
Because most children try to turn the whole shape in their heads at once, which is genuinely hard and gets harder as the figure gets busier. The fix is not more effort but less: pick one landmark, track only that, and check the rest of the shape afterwards. Nearly every child who is stuck on rotation is trying to hold too much at once.
What does a quarter turn actually mean on the page?
A quarter turn moves a landmark one position round — from pointing up to pointing right if the turn is clockwise, or to pointing left if it is anticlockwise. A half turn moves it two positions, so up becomes down either way. Saying the direction aloud before choosing is worth doing, because clockwise and anticlockwise are easy to swap under time pressure.
Is rotation the same as translation?
No. A translation slides a shape without turning it at all, so the shape ends up facing exactly the way it started, just somewhere else. A rotation changes which way it faces. Both leave the size and the angles alone, which is why they are sometimes confused, but a translated figure and a rotated figure look quite different once you check where a landmark points.
Can my child practise this without printed papers?
Yes, and physical practice tends to work better at first. Cut a distinctive shape out of card — something with an obvious point or notch so there is a landmark to track — and turn it on the table by a quarter and a half while your child says where the landmark has gone. Then turn it over to make the mirror image and ask them to prove it is a flip by walking round the outline. Ten minutes of that teaches more than a page of questions.
