Find the clue that rules out: properties of shape
The Short Answer
These questions give several clues at once and ask which shape fits all of them. Naming shapes is no longer the difficulty; holding three or four properties in mind at the same time is. Mark the diagram — ticks on equal sides, arrows on parallel ones — and look for the clue whose only job is to rule something out.
What do these questions ask now?
Not what a rhombus is. Your child knows what a rhombus is.
What the transfer test does with shapes is give three or four clues at once, or a sorting table, or a Venn diagram — and ask them to hold several properties in mind at the same time.

Four steps, and the middle two are the ones that earn marks.
Count the sides.
Mark them — ticks on equal sides, arrows on parallel ones.
Mark the right angles with a small square.
Name it, then test that name against every clue in the question.
Marking is not a warm-up exercise. It is the evidence you argue from — and a child working from marks will beat a child working from an impression, because the distractors are drawn to create impressions.
The clue that rules out
This is the question type that decides the topic.
It has four sides. All four sides are equal. None of its angles is a right angle.
After the first two clues you are down to two shapes: a square and a rhombus. Both have four equal sides.
So what is the third clue for? It has exactly one job — eliminating the square.
A shape can have more than one name
A square is a rectangle — it has four right angles. It is also a rhombus — it has four equal sides.
Sorting questions rely on this. A square placed in the rectangle column of a table is correct, and a child who has learnt the names as separate boxes will mark it wrong.

Try it yourself
Take the clues one at a time and note what each rules out. Watch for the clue that seems to add nothing.
- It has four sides. All four sides are equal. None of its angles is a right angle. What is it?
- In that question, what is the third clue doing?
- It has four sides. Only one pair of sides is parallel. What is it?
- It has three sides and two equal angles. What is it?
- Is a square a rectangle?
- A rhombus. The first two clues leave a square and a rhombus, since both have four equal sides. The third separates them.
- Ruling out the square. That is its only job, and it is how these questions are built — the clue that looks as though it adds nothing is usually the one that decides the answer.
- A trapezium. Only one pair parallel rules out the parallelogram, rhombus, rectangle and square, all of which have two pairs.
- An isosceles triangle. Two equal angles means two equal sides, which is the same fact stated the other way round.
- Yes. A rectangle is a four-sided shape with four right angles, and a square has those. A square is also a rhombus, having four equal sides. Questions sometimes rely on this, so 'it is a square' does not rule out 'it is a rectangle'.
How much practice does this type need at home?
Play twenty questions with shapes. You think of one, your child asks yes-or-no questions about its properties, and has to name it in as few as possible.
To play well they have to ask questions that rule things out rather than questions that confirm what they already suspect — which is exactly the reasoning the multi-clue questions test, arriving as a game rather than a worksheet.

Why does marking the diagram matter?
Because it turns a picture into evidence. Ticks on equal sides, arrows on parallel ones, and a small square in each right angle. Once those are on the page your child is arguing from marks rather than from an impression, and impressions are exactly what a well-drawn distractor is designed to exploit. It takes about ten seconds and it catches most wrong answers.
What is the clue that rules out?
In a multi-clue question, the earlier clues usually narrow it to two shapes and one clue exists purely to separate them. Four sides, all equal — that is a square or a rhombus. No right angles — that clue does nothing except eliminate the square. Children skim past it because it feels like padding. On a GL paper the clue that looks as though it adds nothing is almost always the one that decides the answer.
Can a shape have more than one correct name?
Yes, and questions use it. A square is a rectangle, because it has four right angles. It is also a rhombus, because it has four equal sides. So a sorting question can legitimately place a square in the rectangle column, and a child who has learnt the names as separate boxes will call that an error.
What do the sorting tables and Venn diagrams ask for?
The same knowledge, arranged so that several properties must be held at once. A Venn diagram with 'has parallel sides' in one circle and 'has a right angle' in the other asks your child to test each shape against both, including the overlap and the space outside. The trick is to take one shape at a time rather than one region at a time.
